National Board of Directors Meeting Atlanta, GA. July 29-Aug. 1, 2013 (Printable Form) In the last newsletter I
mentioned the success of the Longest Day program. In Atlanta we learned that
the total going to the Alzheimer Association had reached $551 022.00. This is truly an overwhelming success and I
would like to send a giant thank you to all those who participated. Be sure
not to miss this event next year. News coming out of Atlanta
was that for personal reasons Don Mamula, our
President, will be unable to complete his current term. Beginning August 12th
Bill Cook, the District 10 Director, will be assuming the duties of
President. Anyone knowing Bill will know that he will be an excellent
ambassador for the League. Our Horn Lake head office
is making many changes to benefit the membership. Some of the projects you
can watch for are: -
An expanded on
line partnership desk -
A restructuring
of or tournament department with an improved tournament director structure. -
ABCL Score+ is
scheduled for testing in early 2014. There was a full meeting schedule
and I’ll hi-lite a few of the motions dealt with in Atlanta. The complete
meeting minutes will be posted on the ACBL web site in 3 or 4 weeks. You can
check them out at: http://www.acbl.org/about/bodmeetings.html
. Beginning with the Phoenix
meeting this Fall I will be using a new provider to send this newsletter. The
ACBL has arranged to have their bulk e-mail service send the newsletters.
They will be sending the pre-tournament newsletter and my meeting report will
be posted on the District 18 www.wasumi.org
web site. Be sure to watch for it and don’t stop sending me your thoughts on
all of our issues. As always, may all your
finesses be successful, Claire Jones District
18 BoD Item 132-11: Bylaw
amendment A District Director shall
not serve more than four full terms. This motion failed 9-15-1. There was much discussion
about whether this should be a Board decision or should it be left to the
District’s to decide with their votes when they felt they needed a new
representative. In the end the majority felt this decision was better left to
individual Districts. I voted against this motion. Item 132-31: District NAP
Finals Each District may choose to
host their NAP District Finals on line. This motion was carried 25-0 Geography is a major
concern in many Districts. By giving the individual District the option those
Districts with large geographic boundaries now have the option of hosting
their play downs on line. Item 132-50: NABC 0-10000
Mixed Swiss Teams On the final two days of
the Summer NABCs there shall be a 0-10000 Mixed Swiss Teams. (14-11) Item 132-51: 0-10000 Pairs On the 1st
Saturday and Sunday of the NABCs there shall 0-10000 Pairs. (22-3) Item 132-21: O-10000 Events A 0-10000 Swiss Teams shall
be held on the 2nd Saturday and Sunday of the Fall NABCs. A 0-10000 KO shall be held
starting the Monday of the Spring NABCs.
(23-2) All 3 of these motions
passed. After the success of the 0-10000 point Swiss Teams in St. Louis it
was felt that these would be good additions to the NABC schedule. They are on
a trial basis and will be evaluated in 2 years. The over-all awards will be
10% platinum. I voted in favour of all 3 motions. Item 132-18: Platinum
Points 2.2.2 National rated-events
with an upper masterpoint limit of 10000 will receive 10% Platinum Points for
overall awards only. This passed 24-1. With the start of the new
0-10000 point events this motion was necessary to enable the awarding of
platinum points for the events. Item 132-34: Conditions of
Contest Score Corrections 1. The score correction for a player error expires at
the completion of play of the session following the one in which the error
occurred or thirty minutes after the completion of the final session of
the tournament, whichever is earlier. 2. Add: The Tournament Director-in-Charge in consultation
the ACBL Senior director of Bridge, however, may in
unusual circumstances elect to make a correction of a director error at a
later time. 3. New: For qualifying events the score correction ends
one hour before the first session following qualifying. The carryover score
for qualifiers may be corrected up until the end of the first session
following qualifying. Carried: 25-0 These changes were common
sense rule changes to allow directors more leeway in making corrections to
mistakes that should be corrected. Item 132-20: Reclassifying Machlin Women’s Swiss and Wagar
Women’s teams Exclude Machlin
Women’s teams and Wagar Women’s Swiss as Grand Life
Master qualification events. Carried: 23-1-1 Events that are less than
30 tables for 3 or more years are to be reviewed. These events have been
continuously below 30 for over 10 years. Last year the Wagar
Teams was only 11 tables. It was suggested that these events are no longer of
a high enough stature to warrant their being qualifiers for Grand Life Master
status. I voted in favour of the motion. Item 132-57: Red Ribbon
Pairs Events Shall be revised as
follows: The Red Ribbon Pairs is
open to pairs, each of whom has fewer than 2500 Master Points. Item 132-42: Masterpoint
limit for Flight B NAP’s Effective Jan. 1, 2014 for
the 2014-2015 event the masterpoint limit for NAP
Flight B is changed to 2500. Carried: 25-0 Item 132-43: Masterpoint limit
for GNT’s Effective for the 2013-2014
cycle the masterpoint limit for Flights A and B is changed. Flight B: 0-2500 Flight A: 0-6000 Carried 18-6-1, I voted in
favour. These changes were made to
bring the point range more in line with the actual masterpoint holdings of
our membership. |
