District 18 Phoenix Newsletter November 11, 2013
Each year I have the opportunity to meet a few of the many valuable workers there are across our District. This year I had the privilege of being able to recognise four of these valuable workers by appointing them to the National Goodwill and National Charity Foundation as honorary members. I would like to congratulate Lila Cochran (Idaho Falls) and Doreen Reid (Saskatoon) on being appointed to the Aileen Osofsky ACBL Goodwill Committee and Susan Diggers (Casper) and Rosemary Makelki (Regina) on being appointed to the ACBL Charity Foundation. We are fortunate to have valuable members like these in our League.
Some other valuable members we have are the representatives on State and Provincial District 18 board. This year there is an election for the Montana and Saskatchewan representatives. If you are interested in serving or know of someone who is be sure to have the names sent in to Pam Padgett, our returning officer, (popadgett@yahoo.com ) before January 15, 2014.
The clubs across the District host a number of special Charity Fund games. This year the District 18 charity donation is going to support the Make A Wish Utah foundation and the Saskatchewan Children’s Hospital Foundation. It’s nice to see the good work our donations are doing.
If you get a chance to go to the NABCs you will see there are some new events. On a trial basis the Board has initiated a number of under 10 000 point games. You can check out these events in the complete Board agenda on the ACBL web site.
In Phoenix the Board will be looking at many items that affect bridge around the League. I am listing a few of more important ones below. Please look through these and send me any comments or thoughts on the motions. You can see the complete list of motions on the ACBL web site, http://web2.acbl.org/documentlibrary/about/PhoenixMotions.pdf .
Following the Phoenix meeting I will not be sending out a newsletter but in the weeks following the meeting you will be able to read my report on the District 18 web site ( www.wasumi.org ) and the complete meeting minutes will be posted on the ACBL web site.
All the best to you for the upcoming holidays and as always may all you finesses be successful,
Sincerely, Claire Jones District 18 BoD
Item 133-82 : Electronic Smoking Devices The ACBL Board of Directors look into setting the same policy for electronic smoking devices that is in place for smoking at NABC Tournaments. - This is a new area many of our members are concerned with and a definite policy needs to be developed.
Item 133-83 : Club Committee The BoD establish a permanent Club Committee that will include Club Director & Managers, ACBL Management and the BoD. - Our clubs are the backbone of the League and this would be a valuable source of help.
The language and Conditions of Contest for the GNTs, NAPs, and many of the special games is being updated. These clerical changes remove obsolete sections and clarify the residency requirements for these events. Check the complete list of motions for these editing changes.
Item 133 – 116 : The size of the event, or the number of entries, be a factor in masterpoint awards in district finals for North American pairs and grand National teams. - This is a motion I am opposed to. Our District with a large geographic area and a small population has smaller turnouts than many of the larger more densely populated areas. This would be very punitive to our players. |
