Dallas Report

April 1, 2014

Printable Format

If you haven’t been on the ACBL web site lately you are in for a treat. On the right side of the page is a sneak peak of the new update to our web site. It is by no means complete but I’m sure you will find it a pleasant change. One of the reasons for previewing the site in this manner is to get your input. The League programmers are very interested in your thoughts so as you tour the new layout be sure make notes and send your comments on what you like and ways you feel it could be better.

The NABCs are our most important tournaments and the League is constantly looking for ways to make them more enjoyable for everyone who attends. In Dallas we instituted a number of changes. Check for the revised schedule in the complete Board minutes. For anyone doing their long range planning Atlanta has been added to the NABC schedule for the Summer of 2018 and the Fall of 2023.

The league is in the final stages of a Learn Bridge In A Day Program. Part of this has been the development of a LBIAD electronic toolkit for Units hosting these seminars. Watch for information on how your Unit can become involved.

After last year’s overwhelming success the League is again Co-Sponsoring the Alzheimer Society’s The Longest Day. A tribute to last year’s success is Pepsi Cola joining in this year as a sponsor. If you were unable to join in last year be sure to make sure your club participates this year.

If you have been looking forward to the rollout of the new ACBLSCOR+ program I’m afraid you’ll have to wait a little longer. The program is in the 5th stage of a 6 stage development but the enormity of the project has pushed its completion back to early 2015. As disappointing as this is it is far better to delay and be sure that the implementation is as smooth as possible.

The online Learn To Play Bridge program is in the midst of its soft rollout. Watch for news on when this will be up and running for everyone.

I’ll highlight some of the more significant Dallas motions. I have posted the entire minutes for anyone wanting the complete version.

BoD minutes Dallas – March 2014

Be sure to write with any comments you may have and as always, may all your finesses be successful.

Item 141-27: Roles and Responsibilities of Tournament Sponsors and DICs

This motion adopted a document specifically meant to help our tournament chairs. It gives a detailed list of who is responsible, the chair or the DIC, for the various decisions that need to be made at our tournaments. Be sure to have your chairs read it.

This motion carried unanimously.

Item 141-35: Pairing of Swiss Team Events

This motion made it illegal to pair any round but the 1st round in Swiss teams before the results of the previous round are known. This pre pairing was done to speed up the turnaround time between rounds but often resulted in incorrect pairings being made.

This motion carried unanimously.

Item 141-143: Special Games at Clubs

This motion proposed the elimination of many of the smaller special games. During discussion it was brought out that even though these games are not largely used they are important to the people who use them. It was felt more study was needed before a decision could be made.

This motion was deferred to Las Vegas.

I voted for deferral.
