Las Vegas Newsletter

July 2014

Printable Format

Greetings to Everyone,

There have been some notable changes in the past few months. If you’ve had the opportunity to use the ACBL web page you will have noticed the new design. I’m sure you’ll agree that it is a great improvement but, as with all new things, there have been some minor glitches. Your help is appreciated here. If you have encountered any problems or have thought that there might be a better way to do this, your input is needed. Send your comments and suggestions to the IT department. Another change, or more properly lack of change, has occurred in the development of the new ACBLSCOR program. There were problems with our developer resulting in them not being able to complete the project. As a result the ACBL has taken over the project and the completion date has moved from this summer into the summer of 2015. This was disappointing but I know the end result will be worth the wait.

I have been involved with the Masterpoint Committee and there are some motions being put forward in Las Vegas that I believe will be improvements. In my travels to tournaments one of the common complaints I have heard is that Pairs games do not pay as well as Team games. The committee is recommending changes that are meant to level the playing field. If you look at the highlighted motions below I think you’ll agree.

Another change being recommended is in our Startiflighted games. Under the current structure players with more than 750 points are being forced into the A/X flight. Many players feel they don’t have a place to play where they can play and feel competitive. The Committee is proposing two new formats for this game. The first is a 3rd strat in the top flight so the old A/X will become an A/B/C. The C will be a strat where players graduating from the 0-750 game will feel more comfortable. The second proposal is a game with 3 flights and 2 strats in each flight. The middle or C/D flight will also provide a game where players with more than 750 points will feel more comfortable.  Just as the temperature is going to be extremely warm in Las Vegas I’m sure these motions will provide some heated discussion.

Below I am highlighting the motions most relevant to our District. Please send your comments on these or any of the motions. You can find the complete list of motions on the ACBL web page.

Be sure to watch for a full meeting report on Wasumi in late July.

All the best in your bridge endeavours and as always may all you finesses be successful.

Las Vegas Motions – July 14-17, 2014

-        Highlighted Motions

Please share your thoughts on these or any of the motions on the agenda.

Masterpoint And Event Structure Motions

The full details of these motions are posted on the District 18 Wasumi web site.

General overview of the Motions

-        Item 142 – 113            Stratiflighted Events

-        Item 142 – 114             Unrestricted Events

-        Item 142 – 115             Depth of Awards

-        Item 142 – 116             M Factor

-        Item 142 – 117             T Factor

-        Item 142 – 118             R Factor

-        Item 142 – 119             KO Awards

Item 142 – 140 Special Games at Clubs

This item was deferred in Dallas. It proposed the elimination of many of the smaller special games which are available to the clubs. I oppose this in general as even though these are smaller games they are valuable to the clubs that use them

Item 142 – 45 Gold point Sessions at Regionals

This motions proposes that 2 gold points events be allowed on all 7 days of Regional tournaments. Presently we are not allowed to hold 2 gold point events on the opening Monday. In our District this has resulted in us only having a Monday evening Championship event even though we have paid full expenses for renting our playing space for all of Monday and most of our players arrive early anyway. I believe this would be beneficial to our tournament planning committees.
