Chicago Report

August 2015

Printable Format

This year’s Longest Day is our most successful so far. As of the Chicago meetings the total was over

$600 000. The final total should be close to $650 000, congratulations to all who took part. For the District 18 Canadian players there is some exciting news. Next year there will be distinctive Canadian program. In 2016 Canadians will take part in a program known as Trump Alzheimer’s. Working with the Canadian Alzheimer’s Society this program will mirror The Longest Day. It is hoped that working together these two programs will generate even more funds for the fight against Alzheimer’s. Watch for information in the Spring of 2016.

If you have been following this year’s NABCs you are probably already familiar with the new ABCL Live. If you haven’t seen it yet go to the ACBL web site and check it out. The program makes all tournament results  available. You are able to search results by date, event, and even player name. If you know someone who attended the NABC’s go to the web page, type in their name and you’ll have their complete results down to what they did on board #2 of the Wednesday morning Pairs game. Watch for ACBL Live coming to all our tournaments.

An update of progress on the new ACBLSCOR+ has the proverbial good/bad news scenario. While evaluating the program delivered by the Hammond group there were a number of new considerations added to the mix. The first, and most important, was a determination that the best way to proceed incorporates making use of the cloud to store our data. Consequently the ACBL is now performing an update of our data storage and security hardware with work on ACBLSCOR+ being put on a temporary hold. The new projected date for ACBLSCOR+ is approximately 18 to 24 months. This is not the news we were looking for but the improved product should be worth the wait.

The motions that were presented in Chicago had the normal amount of expected and unexpected results. I will outline the motions I believe are most important for our District. Be sure to check the ACBL web site for the complete meeting minutes.

As always good luck in your bridge and may all your finesses are successful.

District 18 Board of Directors

ITEM 152-30 : The ACBL no longer elect 12C1(e) in the Laws of Duplicate Bridge.

This is a motion of interest to our game directors. We currently follow 12C1(e) when determining results on adjusted boards. The current practice has non-offenders receiving the best possible result while the offenders receive the worst possible result for any board that is adjusted. Beginning January 1, 2016 a result will be awarded that is an averaging of all the probable results. Currently non-offending pairs receive a windfall top for merely being at that table. The new calculated result is more in line with what would be a favorable result for playing the board.

Carried: 25-0-0

ITEM 152-87: STaC Non-Member Surcharge

This motion would require clubs to collect a $3.00 surcharge from non-members when they held a STaC.

Failed: 10-11-4-0

I felt this would hurt special game attendance at our clubs and voted against the motion.

ITEM 152-95: Election Procedure, Term Limits for BoD

Motion Failed 11-13-1

I believe it is up to the individual Districts to determine how long they believe a director should serve and voted against the motion.

ITEM 152-120: WBF Membership

Currently when you pay your ACBL membership a membership into the Word Bridge Federation is included. This motion proposed the ACBL stop submitting the WBF membership fees for ACBL members and allocates this money to day to day ACBL expenses.

Deferred To Denver: Due to an uncertainty about possible conflict of interest for some Board members it was felt it would be best to defer voting until we meet in Denver. By then the conflict of interest questions would be cleared up. I voted in favour of deferral.

ITEM 152-141: KO awards for 5 and 6 person teams at Sectionals and Regionals. (Second reading)

Currently all members of a 5 or 6 person teams receive the full overall masterpoint award regardless of how much they play. This motion would reduce the award by 5% for each half match a player sits out. This would mean you would receive 80% of the overall award if you played in half of each match.

Failed 10-15

I believe this is a fairness issue and voted in favor of the motion.

ITEM 152-182: ACBL Lifetime lists denoting online masterpoints.

In Providence a motion was passed to have the online points shown beside the total masterpoints for published lifetime lists. This motion asked for that motion be rescinded.

Motion   Carried 17-7-1

The mover of this motion felt that having the online points listed separately gave the appearance of treating these points as inferior.

I voted against the motion.
