District 18 Denver Newsletter

November 9, 2015

(Printable format)

The Fall is one of the most rewarding times for holding my position on the Board of Directors. In a time when it seems like allegations of cheating are the biggest news I am able to appoint District 18 Memberships to the ACBL Charity and Goodwill Committees. Throughout the year I am constantly hearing about and seeing the selfless efforts our members make to improve the game of bridge. At this time I am honored to nominate but a few of these individuals. This year Gerald Perry of Coaldale, AB and Lori Bryan of Missoula, MT are the appointees to the ACBL Goodwill Committee while Al Kemp of Idaho Falls, ID and Linda Connell of Saskatoon, SK are the appointees to the ACBL Charity Committee. Please join me in congratulating and thanking these people for all they do for bridge.

The District 18 2015 calendar is almost complete. The District wide STaC, Dec. 7-13, is the only event left on the District’s schedule. If your club hasn’t signed up for this event be sure not to miss out.

The District 18 Board elections for 2016 are for the state of Utah and the province of Alberta. More information  about these elections can be found on the District 18 web site. www.wasumi.org

This year’s Fall NABCs are in Denver, CO. Nov. 26 to Dec. 6. The weather outside may be cold but the friendship at the tables promises to be warm. The Board meetings, Nov. 22-25, have a full agenda. The Fall meeting is when the elections take place for next year’s committees. I will highlight some of the motions I feel are of the most interest to our District. For anyone suffering from insomnia you can find the complete list of motions on the ACBL web site.

Please let me know your thoughts on any of the motions, this is how I become informed on the thoughts from around the District.

Best wishes for the upcoming holiday season and as always may all your finesses be successful.

Denver Motion Highlights:

Item 153-04: Disqualification of Pairs/Teams where a Partner/Teammate has been convicted of Cheating

New clause:

The partners and teammates of said participant(s) shall forfeit all masterpoints and titles earned in events during the four years preceding the admission or finding of guilt.

It is hoped by extending the penalty to partners and team mates it will raise the awareness of everyone. This along with some other wording changes are an attempt to begin to clean up our game.

Item 153-76: Chapter 1B: Ranking,  Masterpoints, and Races, Section 1-Ranking

This motion was submitted by the Ranking Committee which I chaired. Members have raised concerns that the gaps between attaining Silver, Gold and Diamond Life Master are too large. Our motion is proposing two new levels of achievement. Ruby, between Silver and Gold, and Sapphire, between Gold and Diamond. Along with some minor changes to the existing medal criteria this motions hopes to provide an improved Ranking system.

Item 153-32: Entry Fees Team Events

Moved that: At ACBL sponsored events, entry fees for team events of more than two sessions be charged on a per person basis instead of per team basis.

At our Chicago meeting a motion to reduce the masterpoint awards for teams of 5 and 6 persons was defeated. This motion proposes that if 5 and 6 person teams are to receive full masterpoint awards then all persons on the team should pay the full entry fee.

Item 153-45: WBF Membership

Moved that:
3.1.1   The ACBL shall not pay any amount to the WBF for membership dues.

The ACBL currently pays $1.00 per member to the WBF for membership. The movers of this motion feel this amount, over $160 000.00, goes to benefit a very small percentage of the membership. They believe the international players should not be subsidised by the general membership.
