District 18 New Orleans Newsletter March 8-12, 2015 I’d like to begin with a reminder for the District 18 2015 GNT and NAP play-downs. The GNTs will be hosted on the internet May 8/9th. The deadline for registration is May 15th. Check the District’s www.wasumi.org web site for complete details. The NAPs are being held at the District’s final Regional of the year in Regina. This is earlier than normal, Saturday August 29th, so be sure to check your club for qualifying events.
This year our District Board held elections for the Wyoming and Idaho representatives. Al Kemp was elected as the incumbent Idaho representative. Pam Padgett, the long time Wyoming representative chose not to run and I would like to welcome Susan Driggers as the new representative for Wyoming. Pam will be introducing Susan at the District Board meeting taking place at the Bozeman Regional in April. Those attending will have an opportunity to thank Pam for her many years of service to the District.
Something you don’t want to miss is this year’s completely new Regional in Jackpot, Nevada. The loss of the Boise Unit left us with a hole to fill in our tournament calendar. The Twin Falls club came up with a site that promises to be something special. Located on the Nevada border, Jackpot is a short 45 minutes South of Twin Falls. Inexpensive hotels, excellent playing space, and an attractive 10 am and 3 pm schedule make it an ideal tournament site. I hope to see you there.
One of the most interesting happenings scheduled for New Orleans doesn’t even show up in the minutes. I know that at one point everyone has had one of those things you started that just isn’t working out. The problem with these is deciding how long do you keep spending money and when do you just have to stop throwing good money after bad. Last Fall our IT department in Horn Lake had to make one of these decisions concerning ACBL PLUS. About 2 years ago we had entered into a contract to have ACBLSCOR, the backbone of our scoring system, rewritten. After more than a year and many dollars later it became evident that the contractor simply was not going to provide a program that would fill our needs. It was at that time that the contract was terminated. At the Providence Board meeting a committee was formed to do a thorough evaluation of the entire happenings. That committee is scheduled to provide a complete report on the contract and based on that we hope to set a course of action for how we will fulfill our computing needs in the future. This promises to be accompanied by some very spirited discussion.
I’ll give a short outline of the motions that most affect our District but if you want a complete list of the New Orleans motions they are available on the ACBL web site. New Orleans Motions, please share any thoughts you have on the motions. : http://www.acbl.org/acbl-content/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Web-motions1.pdf
