This year District 18 is holding elections for representatives in Utah and Alberta for the

2016 through 2018 term. Congratulations to Doug Adair who was elected by acclamation

as the Utah representative. Alberta has two candidates for the position, Charlie Lamb and

David Johnson. The Alberta Units have a voting deadline of February 29th. Be sure to let

your local Unit know your choice.

One of the motions passed in Denver gave the option of charging KO teams on a per

person basis. After discussion the District 18 Board decided to adopt this practice.

Beginning at the Lethbridge Regional, KO entries across the District will be charged

based on whether the team has 4, 5, or 6 players.

Two major concerns were raised at the ACBL Board of Directors Denver meetings. The

first concerned the integrity of our game. Cheating scandals on the world stage have led

us to evaluate the security we use at our major tournaments. One of the motions being

voted on in Reno asks for the establishment of a task force to look at this issue. Finance

was the second major area that needed to be looked at. This year I am serving on an

advisory committee that is looking at the composition and functioning of the national

Board of Directors. Our charge is to examine how the Board functions and come up with

recommendations for any better ways the board can function both effectively and

financially. This promises to be a challenging task.

A motion that may be of interest to the Canadian tournaments deals with the unfavorable

US dollar exchange rate. This motion is proposing that when the exchange rate is more

than 90% the director’s fees that are charge at tournaments be reduced on a sliding scale.

In difficult financial times this would be a small financial help for the Canadian

tournaments.

The complete list of motions for Reno can be found on the ACBL web site.

Please e-mail me with any questions or comments you may have on the motions.

Following the meeting I will be sending an e-mail to update you on the complete Reno

meeting.

Reno is close to District 18 so I am hoping to see many of you at the tournament. Good

luck with your bridge and as always may all your finesses be successful.
