National Board of Directors Meeting Toronto, Ontario July 18-21, 2011 The Toronto NABC's were very successful with some notable happenings. Of first importance is the fact that the ACBL has completed its search for a new CEO. An agreement has been reached for the new CEO to take over in November. The final details of the contract are still being ironed out so watch for a formal announcement in the near future. I would also like to update you on other happenings coming out of Toronto. From Marketing: A new brochure is completed and available to clubs and teachers. This attractive brochure provides an overview of the ACBL and is a valuable way to introduce the League to new players. If you are interested in more information contact Vicki Campbell, Director of Marketing. E-mail- vicki.campbell@acbl.org A new brochure targeting school officials is also available. This brochure provides an overview of the benefits young people receive from playing bridge.
Official Encyclopedia of Bridge: The 7th edition, a 75th anniversary copy, came out in July. This includes a CD and if you order before August 31st comes at a cost of $39.95. Check in your August copy of The Bulletin.
Cooperative Advertising Program: As a reminder this program is still in operation. The program refunds clubs and teachers 75% of the cost of advertising beginner and/or newcomer programs. Don't forget that you can also apply to District 18 and receive then other 25% of your advertising costs. Contact marketing or go to http://www.acbl.org/marketing/coopAdvertising.html for more details.
Find a Club APP: The ACBL has developed a find a club APP. Check for that at your APP store.
100 Clubs in 100 days: You may have heard that Craig Robinson, the ACBL president, in an attempt to contact our grass roots is visiting 100 clubs across ACBL land. Craig is planning to visit the District 18 club in Sand Point, ID. on Wednesday September 21st. If you are in the Sand Point area be sure to add that to your calendar. There were many motions discussed and voted on in Toronto. I will highlight a few of the more topical ones. If you are interested in more detail I have posted the complete minutes on the web page.
Item 112-110: World Bridge Series Championship. The ACBL Board of Directors supports a World Bridge Series Championship in North America in 2018. Carried: 22-1-2 I voted in favour of this. Playing in competitions of this level is a valuable opportunity for our members.
Item 112-58: Special games a Sectionals. Carried: Unanimously. This gives you the opportunity to earn Regional rated silver points at Sectional.
Item 112-42: Small children and pets in the playing area. Carried: Unanimously. This motion established a policy that is in line with national standards. If you have any questions on your tournaments run be sure to read the entire motion.
Item 112-49 Alert Chart. A. Remove the requirements to alert a cheapest club bid response over a NT opener or overcall, regardless of response structure. Rebids by notrump bidder which are different from standard (such as Puppet Stayman) would still be Alerted. - In the auction 2NT - Pass - 3clubs** - Pass - 3diamonds***, 3clubs**(puppet) is not alerted but the 3diamond*** (has 1 or 2 4-card majors) is still alerted. It was felt alerting the 3clubs helped the bidders more than it helped the defenders. B. Amend the definition of natural openers to include 1C opener on specifically 4432 with 2 clubs and 4-4 in majors. - Presently this 1 club bid is considered to be artificial. That meant you could play systems as Crash or Mathe over it. By defining it as natural you can only use natural defenses. The pair bidding 1C still announces "Could be short" but you now must only use natural defenses. Carried: 22-1-2 I voted in favour of this as both changes were improvements on our present procedures.
Item 112-52: GNT District finals on the internet. Carried Unanimously. I feel proud that our District took a leading role in this motion being passed.
Item: 112-53: GNT Special CoC The Conditions of Contest for 2011-2012 are approved. Carried: Unanimously. If you had checked these prior to Toronto be sure to check the ACBL web site as the new CoC have been posted and there are changes from what had previously been listed.
Item 112-54: Strength of Field Formula A Strength of Field formula be implemented for Regional and Sectional Pair and Swiss Team games. Carried: 17-7-0 I voted against this. The concept has merit in theory but has yet to be shown that it has a practical implementation. Until a practical model can be developed that is fair to all our players I believe we can not commit to this approach.
As always, please contact me with any questions and may all your finesses be successful,
